Mater helps close the gap

Tuesday 22 April 2008, National Close the Gap Day 2008, provided all Australians with the opportunity to come together and show their support for closing the 17 year life expectancy gap between Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islanders and other Australians.

Mater Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander (ATSI) Service helped organise a Close the Gap ceremony on level 2, Mater Adult Hospital to raise awareness for health equality among the Australian ATSI population.

Staff from the ATSI Service and Pastoral Care provided some startling statistics on the health issues facing the ATSI people. They highlighted Mater programs in place to provide some much-needed health services—including The Murri Clinic, MOSH PIT (Mobile Outreach Service for Health Provided by Integrated Teams) and the Brisbane Homelessness Services Centre.

Over 120 693 people have signed the pledge to close the gap. For more information visit www.oxfam.org.au/closethegap.
