The new “Freedom” cochlear implant is a ground-breaking device, equipped with the latest sound processing technology that is set to revolutionise hearing aids and achieve better outcomes for the hearing impaired.
Ms Jackie Moon, Acting Director of Mater Audiology said the new implant has many benefits over previous models but the main advantage is that it gives recipients better speech understanding.
“The new device uses digital technology to cut out the background noise, which in the past has been a major concern for the hearing impaired,” says Ms Moon.
“The implant is also fitted with four listening programs and three microphones, plus it has the extra capability of adding more features in the future.
“It is an exciting development and we look forward to seeing how our patients respond to this new technology,” Ms Moon said.
For William, according to his mother, Hanne Taylor, the implant has already worked wonders.
“Since the cochlear implant was switched on we have noticed William responding to loud noises and he is even starting to say a few words, it is a very exciting time for us,” Ms Taylor enthused.
Mater Cochlear Implant Clinic, which provides cochlear implants to both children and adults with severe hearing loss, are funded to fit 21 adults and 7 children with cochlear implants per year.
