Professor of Midwifery joins Mater Mothers' Hospitals

Australian Catholic University (ACU) and Mater Mothers’ Hospitals (MMH) have announced the appointment of Dr Sue Kildea to the position of Foundation Professor of Midwifery.

The position will strengthen research capacity and generate research output in midwifery health care and practices. It will provide an ideal environment for clinical research and the translation of this research into best practice care for women and newborns.

Professor Kildea is an active and successful researcher with interests in understanding the causes of maternal and perinatal morbidity and mortality and improving access to health services. She has a particular interest in indigenous health, has attained three NHMRC grants and maintains an extensive publication record. She has a distinguished career spanning more than 20 years in clinical, educational and research environments.

Professor Kildea’s last appointment was at Charles Darwin University (CDU) as Associate Professor of Midwifery. She was integral in leading research, along with the preparation and delivery of programs of study. She was also an esteemed maternal child health leader, at Charles Darwin and throughout the Northern Territory, mentoring both staff and clinicians.

During this time she also held a joint position with CDU and the Department of Health and Community Services as Home Birth Service Coordinator.

Professor Kildea has also worked at the University of New South Wales as a Perinatal Health Data Analyst for the School of Women’s and Children’s Health and as a Senior Research Offi cer and Lecturer at the University of Technology Sydney.

Professor Kildea believes in collaborative, interdisciplinary approaches to research. Her leadership skills will enhance the reputation of both organisations as national leaders in maternal and child health and evidence-based practice.
