Exceptional together

Exceptional together

This is the story of a young woman who died. It is a sad story but it is also a story of hope and dignity and of Mater's Mission in action.

In March, a 24 year old woman was admitted to Mater Private Hospital for a biopsy of her cervix. She was subsequently diagnosed with cancer and readmitted in April for radiotherapy and chemotherapy. Through it all, her fiancé was by her side.

Sadly, by June the woman's condition had worsened and they were told that she would soon die. Naturally, they were devastated. Their dreams had been crushed, but they retained hope for a happy life together and indicated that they would like to be married sooner than expected.

Realising the urgency of the situation, the exceptional people at Mater swung into action above and beyond the call of duty. In a coordinated display of efficiency and determination, they arranged a hospital wedding in just under two days.

Staff invited family and friends, the hospital's priest gained special dispensation from the church, a photographer was organised and the all important hair and makeup was arranged. Flowers for the bride and the chapel were provided through Mater Florist and the Hotel Services team coordinated catering.

Finally, on the 15th of June the bride was wheeled in her bed into Mater Private Chapel to her waiting groom. Her pain management had been adjusted to allow her to enjoy her special day and she looked radiant.

The happy couple exchanged vows in front of their friends and family and many of the staff who had been caring for her for the three months since her first admission to hospital.

After the ceremony, guests attended an afternoon tea function in the ward and celebrated the newly wed's love and happiness.

The following morning, the woman died. Her husband was at her side.

After she had departed, a notation was made in her medical record; “May you now rest in peace.”
