Mater Children's Private Hospital (MCPH) Day Unit is currently being extended to accommodate an increase in beds and a new pre-operative suite, catering for insured and non-insured patients.
Due to open on 7 June 2006, the new 16 bed day unit will have the facilities to treat all stage two and stage three patients from both of the children's hospitals. The pre-operative suite will have all the standard features and a parent lounge has been included in the design of this new area.
Once the extensions to this new unit is complete, work will commence to refurbish the existing MCPH Day Unit and convert the area into space for theatre storage, an educational seminar room for staff of Mater Children's Hospital (MCH) and the adults recovery area. The children's recovery area will be separate from the adults and will remain in its current location.
The early stages of this work will have some impact with noise and vibration to immediate neighbouring areas of the MCH. The six operating theatres in the MCH will not be redeveloped and will continue to operate during the construction work, however the entrance of the theatres will remain closed until the work is completed in June.
This work is part of the procedural suite expansions on level five, which will not be finalised until September 2007. Once all the refurbishing is complete, there will be a total of 14 operating theatres to service Mater Adult Hospital, Mater Children's Hospital (for insured and non-insured patients) and Mater Mothers' Hospital (for insured and non-insured patients). There will also be two procedural theatres and two endoscopy suites to service all five hospitals. All hospitals will have separate recovery facilities to cater for the specific patient needs.
