Dr Masood profile

Dr Masood specialises in gastroenterology and is located at Mater Private Hospital Redland

Why did you choose to specialise in gastroenterology?

The reason I chose to specialize in gastroenterology was because it combines both the intellectual challenge of internal medicine and technical skills required for performing endoscopic procedures.

While I was a resident medical officer at the Royal Hobart Hospital, I worked under an amazing gastroenterologist, Dr Huge Jackson, who inspired me significantly. During my medical training at the Prince Alexandra Hospital I also had the opportunity to work with excellent gastroenterologists, who further inspired me to enter this field of medicine.

What do you find the most rewarding aspect of your profession?

In gastroenterology, I see a variety of people who experience symptoms of a number of interesting diseases and every day is full of new challenges. I enjoy the procedural aspect of the field, for example, the instant gratification I feel from making a diagnosis and having the opportunity to treat the diagnosis. It is very rewarding to treat a bleeding ulcer, remove a colon polyp or solve a diagnostic issue.

What is the most challenging area of your specialty?

One of the most challenging areas of my specialty is treating an acute GI bleed, which requires prompt identification of source and successful treatment.

Complex and chronic diseases, including inflammatory bowel disease and chronic liver disease, is also challenging to treat. My aim with these types of cases is to help patients have normal day to day functioning and also to prevent organ damage, long-term disability and the risk of malignancy.

What is your most valuable professional experience to date?

I have worked in three states within Australia including Victoria, Tasmania and Queensland. Working on the Gold Coast has been a great learning experience for me, as I am involved in a lot of procedural work, as well as dealing with a broad spectrum of advance cases in gastroenterology and hepatology, which includes treating Hepatitis C.

Why did you choose to set up practice at the Mater?

Mater's philosophy is to ensure that all patients receive the highest level of holistic care by ensuring that patients have access to skilled specialists and state-of-the-art technology. It is also reassuring for both the treating physician and patient to know that Mater provides a strong support network, which includes nursing staff and other specialists.

Do you have a passion besides medicine?

I like to spend my spare time with my three children and enjoy sharing different activities together.
