CEO's message

Welcome to the first edition of Generally Speaking for 2006. This year is an exciting time for Mater as we celebrate 100 years of providing exceptional care in Brisbane. On Wednesday 4 January, many friends of Mater came together to celebrate our 100th birthday and to pay tribute to the Sisters of Mercy. The day was a joyous occasion and was the first of many centenary events planned throughout the year.

The last 100 years have been filled with many outstanding triumphs for Mater and no more so than this year, with a world first. Scientists at Mater Medical Research Institute have started trialling a new prostate cancer vaccine, which could potentially revolutionise cancer treatments for patients in the future.

I am also pleased to announce that Mater Health Services were one of very few hospitals nationally to have received four years accreditation from the Australian Council on Health Care Standards (ACHS). We are proud of this result and look forward to enhancing our commitment to exceptional care over the four year period of this accreditation cycle.
