Mater Private's Neuro/Cardiac/Vascular Unit splits in two

2009 marks a new phase in Mater Private Hospital Brisbane’s clinical layout with the separation of the Neuro/Cardiac/Vascular Unit into two defined and specialised units.

The new units will be Neurosciences and Cardiac/Vascular, enabling a more specialised clinical approach.

Nursing Director Patient Care Units, Tracey Hutley said the nursing team have worked hard during the past 12 months to deliver patient care across two clinical specialties.

“It has been a real challenge for the staff and they have done an incredible job, however, we hope that by developing two specialised teams that staff will gain further development in their chosen speciality while delivering the highest possible standard of clinical care to our patients,” she said.

The Cardiac/Vascular ward will be managed by newly appointed Nurse Unit Manager, Christine Sullivan, while the Neurosciences Unit will continue to be managed by Kylie Schoeffler.

“Christine commenced on 12 January and brings a wealth of cardiac and management experience to the team,” Ms Hutley continued.

“I believe that her appointment will assist us in ensuring a smooth transition of care for our cardiac patients. Already our Cardiac Manager, Cardiovascular Manager and Coronary Care Manager have discussed ways of looking at enhancing patient care. This is a really exciting time for our patients and staff.”

Ms Sullivan’s previous roles include 12 years as Clinical Manager of an acute cardiac ward and Clinical Nurse Consultant in Casemix/Discharge Planning. She has a strong background in coronary care and has worked throughout Australia and abroad.

Her special clinical interests include heart failure, chronic illness and ageing.

“I would also like to take the opportunity to acknowledge Kylie and the 9th floor team for their hard work and positive attitude toward patient care. It has been a difficult time for many staff on that ward and I would personally like to thank each and every one of you,” Ms Hutley concluded.
