New clinic for Velo Cardio Facial Syndrome (VCFS) patients

New clinic for Velo Cardio Facial Syndrome (VCFS) patients

In May, the Queensland Health Minister, The Honourable Mr Stephen Robertson, MP officially opened Mater VCFS Clinic, an outpatient service that supports children suffering from VCFS.

VCFS is a common genetic condition that occurs due to the deletion of a small part of chromosome 22, which can cause significant abnormalities in child development. Typically these relate to the face, palate and heart as well as learning and behavioural difficulties.

The clinic, which is the first of its kind in the southern hemisphere, has been developed by Mater Health Services in conjunction with the VCFS Foundation (Qld) Inc to help support families, children and young people to the age of 18 living with this condition.

The clinic will also coordinate existing medical treatments in consultation with clinical specialists from Mater Children's Hospital, as well as providing access to psychological services and integrated research.
