Mater researchers, pathologists and clinicians are set to play a critical part in revolutionising treatments for cancer and other diseases, as part of a new collaborative to develop "magic bullets" to wipe out disease with more than A$30 million Federal Government funding.

In the midst of the activity and excitement surrounding the redevelopment of the Children's and Mothers' Hospitals, we were also saddened by the passing of two highly esteemed and valued colleagues, Sister Patricia Reordan RSM and Professor Fung Yee Chan.

It is a well-known fact that there is a skills shortage in the Australian workforce. This shortage is especially concerning for health facilities like Mater as we struggle to find appropriately trained nurses from a diminishing global pool.
Sr Pat, as she was affectionately known, was for many years the senior scientist in haematology at Mater Adult Hospital Laboratory.
