In 1954 Mater Private Hospital formed Queensland's first Neurosurgery Department with Dr Peter Landy as physician and Dr Geoff Toakley as surgeon.
Fifty-four years later neurosurgery at Mater continues to grow with nine practising neurosurgeons and four neurologists regularly visiting Mater Private Hospital Brisbane. The newly created 52-bed neuro/cardio/vascular unit performs more cases annually than any other Queensland hospital.
With an aim to be recognised nationally the multidisciplinary team at Mater Private Hospital Brisbane work together to achieve outstanding neurosurgical clinical outcomes across all areas of surgery, emergency care, intensive care, rehabilitation and nursing care.
Mater Private Hospital Brisbane's exceptional team boasts a very low infection rate for neurosurgical cases and over the past 12 months, a patient satisfaction rate in the top percentile ranking for neurosciences.
According to Mater Private Hospital Brisbane neuro/cardio/vascular unit manager Kylie Schoeffler, its collection of surgeons, clinical outcomes, focus on the multidisciplinary approach to care and cutting edge equipment is a great achievement for a hospital of its size.
In an ongoing pursuit of excellence, Mater Private Hospital Brisbane has partnered with the Australian Catholic University to introduce a Graduate Certificate in Neuroscience for nursing staff. The course, run by members of Mater Private Hospital Brisbane is nursing team, is one of only two Graduate Certificate courses for Neurosurgery in Australia.
"Currently five staff members are completing this degree, and will graduate in September 2008," Kylie said. "The course will be held again in 2009, and we expect to have even more participants."
