Supporting breast cancer patients at Mater

Each October the nation assembles in support of Breast Cancer Month to raise awareness and vital funds for breast cancer research.

Breast cancer is one of the most common cancers among women in Australia, with more than 13 000 cases diagnosed each year.

However, research into prevention and cure is helping create better treatment options and improved outcomes for patients—deaths from breast cancer have decreased by approximately 22 per cent.

Mater Private Breast Cancer Centre offers professional, personalised care, education and ongoing support for patients, their families and friends to help understand the breast cancer journey.

chicks in pink was formed in 2003 as a fundraising support to Mater Private Breast Cancer Centre and now extends this to the wider community through their commitment to breast cancer support services.

Since its inception, chicks in pink have raised $500 000 to fund a range of initiatives across Mater Health Services. Purchases are practical, tangible and relevant to provide immediate benefit to breast cancer patients at Mater.

As part of their commitment, chicks in pink gift two mastectomy bras to women who undergo this surgery. The group also funds a “Mindful parenting in the context of breast cancer” program in support of mothers diagnosed with the disease and “Pink Pilates”, a physiotherapy-based program designed to facilitate recovery from breast cancer surgery and treatment through personalised health programs.
