Dr Neil Wetzig chose to specialise in breast and endocrine surgery because of his interest in breast cancer and its pathology and the combination of endocrinology with surgery.
He graduated from medical school at The University of Queensland in 1978 and trained at Princess Alexandra Hospital before working as a registrar at the Royal Surrey Hospital in Guildford, a pilot centre for breast cancer screening in the United Kingdom. Dr Wetzig returned to Australia in 1988, taking up a post as senior lecturer in surgery at The University of Queensland. He commenced private practice in 1989.
In 2000, Dr Wetzig was a key figure in the establishment of the RACS SNAC trial, the first surgical clinical trial for breast cancer that was designed and implemented in Australia and New Zealand.
Dr Wetzig currently consults from Mater Private Breast Cancer Centre and the Wesley Medical Centre. He also works as a senior visiting surgeon at the Princess Alexandra Hospital. In addition to private practice, Dr Wetzig travels regularly to the Democratic Republic of Congo to teach and conduct surgery on large goitres and other general surgical conditions.
