Dr Cleonie Jayasuriya was born in Sri Lanka and migrated to Australia with her family in her teens. She completed her MBBS at the University of Queensland in 1999, before joining the Royal Brisbane and Women’s Hospital as an intern.
Dr Jayasuriya then undertook her general physician and cardiology training at the same hospital. She completed the majority of her cardiology and general echocardiography training at Princess Alexandra Hospital and was admitted as a Fellow of the Royal Australasian College of Physicians in 2008.
Given her interest in echocardiography Dr Jayasuriya undertook further training at the Heart Centre at St Paul’s Providence Hospital in Vancouver Canada. Here she developed her specialist skills in interventional Transesophagealechocardiography and in particular transcatheter aortic valve implantation (TAVI). The Heart Centre has been one of the leading centres in carrying out transcatheter valve implantation. Dr Jayasuriya subsequently published a review of TAVI in the Journal of the American Society of Echocardiography. She is also experienced in guidance of percutaneous atrial septal defect and patent foramen ovale closures.
In addition to her interest and experience in valvular disease, Dr Jayasuriya’s other major interest and area of expertise is exercise and pharmacological stress echocardiography.
Since returning to Australia, Dr Jayasuriya has been working as a staff specialist at the Logan Hospital and also consults at Mater Private Hospital Redland.
