Dr Perkins is an established hematologist and pathologist with a strong international reputation in the regulation of blood stem cell differentiation and cancer genetics. His major research interests are in the genetics of stem cell networks and the genetics of cancer. A/Prof Perkins’ field-defining Nature article on the role of erythroid Kruppel-like factor (EKLF) in red blood cell generation has been cited more than 300 times, and his pioneering PNAS paper on the role of Hox genes in leukemia has been cited more than 150 times.
Dr Perkins is Group Leader in Haematopoiesis in the Institute for Molecular Bioscience (IMB) at the University of Queensland, one of Australia’s leading research institutions. He undertook his clinical training at Royal Prince Alfred Hospital in Sydney, a PhD in genetics at the Walter and Elisa Hall Institute of Medical Research in Melbourne, and post-doctoral studies at Harvard Medical School.
Dr. Perkins is a member of The Haematology Society of Australasia, The American Society of Hematology, The Australian and New Zealand Society for Cell and Developmental Biology and a Fellow of The Royal Australasian College of Physicians (FRACP) and the Royal College of Pathologists of Australasia (FRCPA).
