Dr Sanjeev Naidu, a general and colorectal surgeon at Queen Elizabeth II Hospital and Mater Private Hospital Brisbane, introduced this minimally invasive technique for pilonidal and perianal fistula disease to Australia two years ago. This technique was invented by Prof P Meinero who is from Genoa, Italy. Dr Naidu had the opportunity to learn this technique from Prof Meinero in Switzerland and in Italy. Since learning the procedure, Dr Naidu has been performing this surgery at Mater and Queen Elizabeth II Hospital. He has shared his experience with his colleagues and recently a surgical course was run at the two hospitals on the technique. Dr Sanjeev Naidu, Dr Chris Gillespie, Dr Geoff Muduioa and Dr Chung-Kwun Won are now offering this procedure for perianal and pilonidal disease at the Mater Private Hospital Brisbane. The advantage of the procedure is that it allows direct visualisation of the fistula tract, complete de-epithelialisation of the tract, and identification and treatment of secondary fistula tracts as well. It can often be performed as day surgery and results are promising thus far. The new technique has been adopted in Europe, Singapore, Canada, Mexico and Brazil and is another alternative treatment to fistulotomy. Both pilonidal and perianal fistula disease are common in younger patients and can have profound physiological and psychological impact on patient lives. Drs Naidu, Gillespie, Muduioa and Won are currently accepting referrals for new patients with pilonidal and perianal fistula disease.
