Orthopaedic Surgery - public patients

Purpose

This page contains information for general practitioners on how to refer patients aged 16 years and over to Fracture Clinic and Orthopaedic services at Mater Hospital Brisbane.

Scope of Service

This service includes referrals for:

  • Sports injuries, including knee ligament problems
  • Primary and revision lower limb joint replacement surgery
  • Foot and ankle conditions
  • Shoulder conditions
  • Fractures
  • General orthopaedic conditions (exclusions as below).

Some referrals may be assessed and managed by our Orthopaedic Physiotherapy Screening Clinic (OPSC) or Clinical Nurse Coordinator.

This service does not have the capacity to accept referrals for:

  • Spinal surgery e.g. any spinal pathology that may require surgery
  • Complex fingers and hands e.g. all conditions below the carpus, arthritis, tumour, ligament injury, tendon injury, 1st CMC arthritis
  • Complex wrist e.g. arthritis, scapholunate ligament injury, scapholunate advanced collapsed (SLAC) wrist, scaphoid non-union advanced collapse (SNAC), Kienboch’s disease
  • Complex elbow e.g. instability, arthritis
  • Complex forearm e.g. radial/ulna club hand, malunion of radius/ulna, radial/ulna/median nerve injuries and requiring tendon transfers
  • Orthopaedic Oncology
     

Referral Criteria

Please include all of the minimum referral requirements and please include relevant investigations as below:

  • AP pelvis lateral hip xray centred on symphis pubis and with templating ballbearing

  • Walking distance
  • Previous THR/TKR
  • Examination for range of movement and fixed deformity
  • AP weight bearing, lateral and skyline xray

Referral Categorisation

Available appointments are provided to our patients based on clinical priority.

Examples only (not a complete list of referrals accepted). This should be used as a general guideline only – categorisation will be based on the individual referral.

PRIORITY SEMI-URGENT ROUTINE

Knee and Hip

  • Bone and/or joint infection

Fractures

  • Displaced and/or angulated fractures
  • Open fractures
  • Fractures with abnormal neurology
  • Fractures requiring reduction
  • Inadequately reduced fractures

Soft tissue & Ligamentous injuries

  • Acute knee ligament injuries 

Knee and Hip

  • Acute knee pain
  • Acute joint pain with mechanical symptoms
  • Locked knee

Knee and Hip

  • Anterior knee pain
  • Arthritic hip or knee pain
  • Total hip or knee replacement wear or loosening
  • Osteoarthritis
  • Avascular necrosis

Hand/Wrist

  • Carpal Tunnel syndrome
  • Trigger finger
  • Ganglia

Foot/Ankle

  • Arthritis
  • Pain and deformity in forefoot (including bunions)
  • Achilles tendon pathology
  • Heel pain

Shoulder

  • Pain and stiffness
  • AC join problems
  • Rotator cuff tendinopathy
  • Shoulder instability
  • Recurrent shoulder dislocation

Mater endeavours to see all priority patients within 30 days from GP referral

Mater endeavours to see all semi urgent patients within 3 months from GP referral

Mater endeavours to see all routine referrals within 12 months from GP referral
