Mater’s NEAT results best in Australia

Tuesday 22 July 2014

Mater Adult Hospital has outperformed 112 of Australia’s major and large hospitals against the National Emergency Access Target (NEAT) for 2013.

Performance against the target, which is reported quarterly, highlights the percentage of patients leaving emergency departments (ED) within four hours of arrival, by being admitted into a hospital inpatient ward, discharged ‘home’ or referred to another hospital.

Mater Adult Hospital was the highest performing hospital across the country for the October-December 2013 quarter when compared to other major metropolitan hospitals, with almost 90 per cent of patients departing ED within four hours of arrival.

The national target is for 90 per cent of all patients to depart ED within four hours of arrival by the end of 2015.

On an annual basis, Mater Adult Hospital was also one of only three major metropolitan hospitals in Queensland to meet or exceed the Queensland target of 77 per cent for all of 2013, with 82 per cent of all patients departing within 4 hours of arrival from January to December. This is a 14 per cent improvement on the results for the previous 12 month period.

Mater’s excellent performance against the target is the result of a ‘whole of hospital’ approach. Key stakeholders from across the entire patient journey, including consultant clinicians and nursing teams, have worked collaboratively to focus on patient flow and improving the quality of patient care.

A NEAT dashboard, which is distributed daily, was also developed and performance and continuous process improvement is discussed at a monthly ‘whole of hospital’ meeting.

The introduction of a four-hour focus has resulted in improved timeliness of care for patients throughout the hospital, both in the Emergency Department and inpatient wards. Across the country, NEAT results assist health care professionals and hospitals compare their performance against similar hospitals, and support the sharing of effective practices for managing the time patients spend in ED.
