Mater specialists give much needed surgery to Ugandan boy, Benson
Mater surgeons are giving Ugandan boy Benson hope through reconstructive genital surgery.

Benson underwent surgery at Mater Children’s Private Hospital Brisbane on Friday 23 June, with Urologist Dr David Winkle, Plastic and Reconstructive Surgeon Dr Scott Ingram and Anaesthetist Dr Amanda Harvey all donating their time.

Mater Health Chief Operating Officer Sean Hubbard believes that integral to Mater’s Catholic identity and Mission is our preparedness to respond compassionately to those who are most vulnerable within our community.

“Mater is proud to support our doctors who work to provide a better outcome for patients such as Benson.”

“This example of outreach to Benson Wasswa from Uganda is one component of Mater’s broader community benefit response to provide healthcare to people from a refugee background, people experiencing homelessness, those in poverty, and Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Australians.”

Dr Winkle said the surgery was made possible by a group of individuals and companies who are delighted and in some ways privileged, to be able to help Benson.

“It’s not a common thing. Obviously it almost never happens in this environment, but in other environments it does happen.”

The complex three-hour procedure was performed as planned and Benson is resting and recovering comfortably.
