Appointment of Directors - Surgical and Acute Care Services, Mater Health

The governance structure for the Surgical and Acute Care Services Stream at Mater has now been finalised and the Directors that are filling the key roles in this structure have been announced.

The newly appointed Directors will work closely with the triumvirate to provide a balance of strategic expertise and operational clinical leadership across the organisation. They will also lead the multi-disciplinary care of patients for clinical services across all of Mater Health.

The Directors will report to Surgical and Acute Care Services Stream Director Dr Sanjeev Naidu. The new appointees are:

Dr Nai An Lai—Director, SCAPP Services (Surgical, Critical Care, Anaesthesia, Perioperative / Procedural Services), Clinical Stream Governance
Dr Lai is an Intensivist at Mater and QEII Jubilee Hospital, currently the Director of Intensive Care and Acute Perioperative Services and Chairman of the Medical Advisory Committee at QEII Jubilee Hospital. Dr Lai is a long-serving member of the Safety and Quality Committee of Metro South Health Board, Statewide Intensive Care Clinical Network and the Board of Directors, Queensland Intensive Care Services. Dr Lai will also have responsibility and oversight of the Intensive Care Units and Department of Anaesthesia at Mater Health.

Dr Richard Lewandowski—Director, Surgical Specialties, Paediatrics Mater Children’s Private Brisbane and Junior Doctor Management
Dr Lewandowski is a highly regarded plastic and reconstructive surgeon who completed his Bachelor of Medicine and Surgery at the University of Queensland in 1981. Further to this, in 1993 he became a Fellow of the Royal Australasian College of Surgeons, specialising in Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery. In 1995, he also gained a Fellowship Diploma in Craniomaxillofacial Surgery from the Eastern Virginian Graduate School of Medicine, USA. Dr Lewandowski will also have responsibility for the multidisciplinary sub-specialties of ENT, Ophthalmology, Plastic and Thoracic Surgery.

Dr Christopher Pyke—Director, General Surgery
Dr Pyke is a general surgeon with a special interest in breast and endocrine surgery.
After completing his surgical training at Mater, Dr Pyke undertook surgical fellowships at the Nottingham Breast Unit in the United Kingdom and the Mayo Clinic in the USA. On his return to Australia, Dr Pyke took up a position as senior lecturer with The University of Queensland and completed a PhD in breast cancer risk quantification. Dr Pyke enjoys the challenge of working within a multidisciplinary team and will have responsibility for the sub-specialties of Upper Gastrointestinal / Hepato-Pancreatico-Biliary, Colorectal, Vascular and Breast/Endocrine Surgery.

Dr John Radovanovic—Director, Orthopaedics
Dr Radovanovic is a Queensland trained orthopaedic surgeon, his interests include hip and knee replacements and arthroscopy. Dr Radovanovic furthered his training whilst on fellowships in the UK and Australia with a focus on treatment of arthritis and sports injuries of the knee. Research and education form part of Dr Radovanovic’s ongoing practice at Mater with involvement in projects regarding the management of various orthopaedic conditions which continue to evolve with the support of university affiliations.  Dr Radovanovic is also involved with furthering the education and skills of medical students through to fellows in orthopaedic surgery.

Dr Roger Watson—Director, Urology / Gynaecological Oncology
After completing urological specialty training in Brisbane in 1993, Dr Watson undertook further training in the UK (Reconstructive Urology Fellowship at Guy’s Hospital, London) and the USA (Urological Oncology Fellowship at the University of Miami, Florida).
Since his return to Brisbane in 1996, he has continued to develop his subspecialty interest in the diagnosis and management of urological cancer, particularly bladder, prostate and kidney cancer. This has included further training in laparoscopic renal surgery, prostate brachytherapy and robotic radical prostatectomy.

This appointment of these Directors concludes the recruitment process for the Surgical and Acute Care Services Leadership Team, and the newly appointed staff will join their colleagues, previously appointed to leadership roles within the Stream across Mater Health:

• Dr David Hewett – Director Gastroenterology and Endoscopy
• Dr Shane Townsend – Director Intensive Care
• Dr Ian Airey – Director Anaesthesia

In addition to these clinical leadership roles, the Surgical and Acute Care Stream will be supported by senior Mater clinicians to promote and advance excellence in Research and Education:

• Dr Anne Leditschke – Research Stream Lead
• Dr John Bingley – Education Stream Lead
