Dr Butler completed his MBBS and FRANZCOG specialist training in Queensland. During this time he worked for over seven years in tertiary facilities, developing his interest in the management of complex medical conditions in pregnancy, and high-risk pregnancies. He also spent 2 years post-membership dedicated to tertiary endoscopic and laparoscopic surgery, and has a special interest in the minimally invasive management of many gynaecological conditions.

Dr Butler has a keen interest in education and research, and is currently a Senior Lecturer and examiner at the University of Queensland. He also lectures for the DRANZCOG training course, the Advanced GP Alignment and midwifery education programs, and co-ordinates the registrar education program at Mater Mothers' Hospital.
