He has extensive experiences in laparoscopic sleeve gastrectomy, roux-en-Y gastric bypass, minigastric bypass, biliary reconstruction and pancreatic tumour resections. His special interest is in complex revision bariatric procedures such as gastric bandto- bypass and sleeve-to-bypass. Dr Cheng is an accredited robotic surgeon and performed the first total robotic sleeve gastrectomy and roux-en-Y gastric bypass in Queensland.

Dr. Cheng underwent surgical training in Melbourne. He qualified as a General Surgeon and became a fellow of the Royal Australasian College of Surgeons in 2010. After coming back from overseas, Dr Cheng further advanced his expertise and skills by training in a high volume Hepatobiliary and Bariatric unit at the Royal Brisbane and Women’s Hospital. From this experience, Dr. Cheng had the opportunity to witness the enormous demands and benefits of bariatric surgery in Queensland. In 2015, he formed the Multi-Disciplinary Bariatric Surgery Service in Princess Alexandra Hospital and Queen Elizabeth II Jubilee Hospital. The service has now been adopted as the model of care for the Queensland Statewide Bariatric Surgery Initiative.

At the same time, Dr Cheng started his private bariatric surgery practice in Mater Private Hospital Brisbane. Together with his team of specialists, dietitians and clinical psychologist, Dr Cheng has successfully helped hundreds of patients achieving their weight loss goals and comorbidities resolution. Apart from bariatric surgery, Dr Cheng welcomes referrals for hernia surgery, gallbladder surgery, anti-reflux procedures and hepato-pancreatic-biliary surgery. Dr Cheng is accredited with the Gastroenterological Society of Australia in gastroscopy and colonoscopy. He is happy to accept direct referral for screening colonoscopy for the National Bowel Cancer Screening Program.
