Biography

Dr Gabriel James has always had a passion for helping mothers to birth their babies in a safe and secure environment. He also has a passion for precise and thorough pathways to gynaecological problems. Throughout his training to become a specialist obstetrician and gynaecologist his priority has always been to recognise the wishes of the woman who is his patient and offer her a holistic approach regarding her health.

After working as a scientist in biotechnology and pharmaceutical development he completed his medical training at the University of Sydney in 2010 on an academic scholarship. His first senior resident role in obstetrics and gynaecology was at the Royal Prince Alfred Hospital in 2012. In 2013 he undertook a diploma of obstetrics and gynaecology in Sydney’s Northern Beaches before seeing the light and moving to Queensland to undertake specialist training. Over the last 10 years he has worked in some of the busiest tertiary maternity hospitals in Australia including the Gold Coast University Hospital and the Mater Mothers’ Hospital. During this time, he has cared for many women with high-risk pregnancies. He has also enjoyed supporting those low-risk pregnancies wanting a low intervention experience.

At present, Dr James is undertaking doctoral studies at the University of Queensland exploring fertility treatments to achieve natural conception and optimise pregnancy health. This project will help couples with endometriosis, irregular and painful menstrual cycles, unexplained infertility, and those needing advanced surgical methods to optimise their fertility potential to name a few.

Dr James has spent seven summers volunteering his medical and construction skills across the world including stints in Fiji, the Philippines, Tonga, Vietnam, Papua New Guinea and in several remote Australian Indigenous communities.

Dr James is approachable, calm in a crisis and an excellent listener (according to his wife and three children!). He takes great joy in being part of the journey of a woman and her family.
