Dr Niemann MBChB, FRCPA, MMed (Haematopathology) completed his MMed in Haematopathology at the University of Pretoria (South Africa) in 1998, after which he joined Pretoria's 1st Military Hospital where he spent the next two years as consultant haematologist.

In 2000, Dr Niemann left the 1st Military Hospital to join a private pathology practice, where he continued to work and develop their investigative profile until December 2009.

Since joining Mater Pathology in February 2010 as Director of Haematopathology, Dr Niemann has been integrating and utilising his skills and expertise in the field, using developing technology to assist clinicians in diagnosing conditions and determining prognoses. Areas of special interest include flow cytometry, the "investigative" aspects of laboratory haematology, coagulation abnormalities, and, nowadays, appropriating advances in molecular medicine to the diagnosis (and treatment) of relevant haematological conditions. Haematology is the "river that flows through the landscapes of the (human) body, picking up clues in the various systems through which it runs and presenting them to the haematologist to make an accurate diagnosis... As such it is a most exciting discipline in medicine, and Dr Niemann regards himself as fortunate to be part of it.

Dr Niemann is a Fellow of the Royal College of Pathologists Australasia.
