New Mater Group Executive structure

Friday 20 April 2018

A recent restructure of key leadership roles at Mater has been announced to create a smaller, more agile group structure to strengthen Mater’s Ministries of Health, Education, Research and Foundation.

The most notable change is  the creation of a Health Executive, comprising the five clinical stream leads, and bringing the Chief Medical Officer and Chief Nursing and Midwifery Officer as well as Clinical Support Services (including Pathology, Medical Imaging, Pharmacy) together under the Mater Health portfolio. These positions all report to Mater Health Chief Executive Officer Sean Hubbard.

This structure creates a strong Health Executive, with significant expertise and experience in complex healthcare. With the formation of a Health Executive, the role and function of the Clinical Council will also be considered and an update will be provided in the coming months.

Alongside these changes, there are some additional changes to the Business Lead positions for Mater Health:

  • Luke van Luik has transitioned to Surgical/Acute Care Services as Associate Director of Business.
  • Dan Axelson is responsible for the Neurosciences portfolio in addition to Cancer Care.
At the Mater Group level, Dr Shane Kelly recently tendered his resignation from the role of Group Chief Executive Officer. Dr Kelly commenced as Mater’s first Group CEO in 2015 and has contributed enormously to the establishment of Mater Group as an integrated, singularly governed entity combining Mater Health, Mater Education, Mater Research and Mater Foundation. He has accepted the role as Group CEO at St John of God Health Care with their Head Office in his home State of Western Australia.

Mater Research Chief Executive Officer Professor John Prins has been appointed Acting Group CEO and will officially commence in the role when Dr Kelly departs Mater in mid May 2018. Professor Prins was appointed CEO/Director of Mater Research in 2009 and remains an active clinician-scientist, a key opinion leader in diabetes and endocrinology in Australia and sits on numerous national and international scientific, clinical and educational committees and boards.
