Mater’s new Recovery College is changing the road to recovery for young adults

The Emotional Health Unit’s Recovery College uses innovative ways of providing mental health education frameworks for young adults aged 16 to 25, and is the first of its kind in Queensland.

Unlike traditional mental health day programs, Mater’s Recovery College allows attendees to choose and complete the training modules that relate specifically to them.

These modules are run by trained and skilled mental health clinicians from different backgrounds and are co-designed by young people with real life experience. The use of consumer driven educational frameworks ensures young adults are provided the relevant skills and information to help them on their road to recovery.

There are currently ten modules covering topics such as depression, anxiety, healthy lifestyle choices, mindfulness and guidance on choosing the right type of therapy. Young adults can also choose to take part in evidence-based therapy sessions including Sensory Modulation for managing emotional states and Dialectical Behaviour Therapy for Borderline Personality Disorder.

These sessions provide an opportunity for attendees to practice the skills taught and be empowered to lead their own recovery journey. Most importantly, these sessions are held with other young adults aged 16 to 25, allowing them to share and hear from others in similar situations in a supportive, safe environment.

While the Recovery College is focused on providing support and skills for young adults, family members are also invited to attend the Building Family Resilience module. This session has been developed for family members who have been affected by a young adult living with mental health problems.

To attend sessions at the Recovery College, young adults will need a referral from a GP or specialist. To find out more about this service, view the module information or session times, visit mater.org.au/emotionalhealthunit or call 07 3163 6102.
