New rehab gym opens at Redland

The expansion of the Mater Private Hospital Redland rehabilitation gym is now complete. 

The team welcomed their first patients today (18 February) in the new purpose built facility which includes a room for patient assessments and group work, along with its own consultation room, kitchen and dining area. 

The rehabilitation service has experienced continued growth over the past several years as demand from the local community has increased.  

More than 930 patients have benefited from the service in the past 12 months. 

Mater Private Hospital Redland Director of Clinical Services Tracey Hutley said it was an exciting milestone to open the new facility. 

“It’s wonderful to have this purpose-built rehabilitation gym at Redland which allows us to cater for more local patients—both inpatients and those in the community,” she said. 

“This project is testament to the dedication and hard work from our rehabilitation staff, Mater Specialists and also Mater’s Capital Works team who collaborated to achieve this positive outcome for our patients,” she said. 

The gym includes some new equipment and most importantly the full kitchen facilities allow patients to regain confidence carrying out every day domestic tasks in a supported environment. 

Rehabilitation physician Dr Jan Paul Rotinen Diaz said that the expansion provides significant benefits to the local community.

“The expanded rehabilitation gym is a fantastic addition to our rehabilitation unit that will allow us to further expand on our services for the local community. We will continue to build our strong focus on geriatric, neurological and orthopaedic rehabilitation across our day therapy and inpatient rehabilitation programs,” he said.

The project is part of larger expansion works at Redland, with a new medical oncology unit being built, due to open to patients by mid-year.
