Dr Peter Steer announced as new Mater Group Chief Executive Officer

Mater Misericordiae Ltd Board Chair Mr Brian Flannery Mr Brian Flannery has announced that Dr Peter Steer has accepted an appointment to the position of Mater Group Chief Executive Officer.

Dr Steer is currently Chief Executive of Great Ormond Street Hospital for Children (GOSH) in London, and will return to Brisbane to join Mater in December 2018.

Dr Steer commenced his medical career at Mater Brisbane in 1982 after graduating from The University of Queensland, and worked at Mater in Adults and Children’s Hospitals until 1987. After a few years in New Zealand and Canada with further training in Neonatology he returned to Mater Mothers’ and Children’s Hospitals in 1991 and continued until 2001.

Peter then spent further time at McMaster University and Hamilton Health Sciences in Canada before coming back to Brisbane where he was heavily involved in the merger of Royal Children’s and Mater Children’s Hospitals as CEO of Children’s Health Queensland.

In 2015 Peter joined the National Health Service in the United Kingdom as Chief Executive, Great Ormond Street Hospital for Children (GOSH).

“The Mater Board is pleased to appoint such an experienced, well-regarded clinician and administrator to continue and enhance the marvellous work of Mater,” Mr Flannery said.

“I would also like to express my appreciation on behalf of the Board for the dedication and energy Professor John Prins has given in his role as Acting Group CEO. John will continue in this role until October when he takes up the prestigious role of Head of Medical School at Melbourne University.”

Dr Steer said it had been a privilege to have worked at Great Ormond Street Hospital.

“I began my career at Mater and this role is a remarkable opportunity to be able to return with the knowledge I have gained from working at GOSH and other global institutions to improve the health and well-being of a very large and diverse patient group.”
