Congratulations to Associate Professor Jakob Begun who has been named the new Director of Mater’s Gastroenterology services. Dr Begun will be stepping into this role, as the previous Director, Dr Marianne Mortimore, departs after nearly eight years of service as Director and 14 years at Mater Hospital Brisbane tpo focus on private practice.
Jake said Marianne has left an amazing legacy and he was excited to follow in her footsteps, continuing to transform, innovate and expand the hospital’s gastroenterology services to improve patient outcomes.
Marianne said she has seen a significant increase in the demand for gastroenterology services in Queensland during her career and was proud of the achievements of her department in responding to that challenge.
“By applying best practice and innovative solutions our team of doctors, nurses, allied health and administrators have improved endoscopy quality while reducing waiting lists, introduced new services and treatments for Inflammatory Bowel Disease (IBD) and developed new models of care for liver disease as we work to eradicate Hepatitis C,” Marianne said.
“The team have introduced several programs including the HepREACH hepatology community outreach program as well as expanding research and clinical trial capabilities.
“The Mater team launched Australia’s first young adult gastroenterology service in collaboration with the Mater Young Adult Support Unit (YASU) in particular developing a transition program for young adults with Inflammatory Bowel Disease with Queensland Children’s Hospital.”
Wishing to build on Marianne’s vision for the Gastroenterology services at Mater, Jake is excited to continue improving the patient journey and focus on how the team can efficiently provide exceptional, world-class patient care.
“I will focus on enhancing IBD and Hepatology patient services as well as supporting cutting edge research and clinical trials in collaboration with Mater Research. I will also focus on continuing our high-quality endoscopy service including our Endoscopic Retrograde Cholangiopancreatorgraphy (ERCP) services,” Jake said.
“I wish to continue our strong tradition of educating and training medical students and junior doctors, while embracing technologies such as fibroscan in hepatology and intestinal ultrasound in IBD as diagnostic and monitoring tools.
“We are a collegiate team who work at the coal face of the hospital where we find collaborative ways to problem solve and innovate improving our clinical capabilities, patient outcomes and overall patient experience.
“Our multidisciplinary team work closely with other departments such as surgical and oncology and I look forward to expanding on these relationships moving forward.”
