"As my chapter at Mater ends, I simply want to say 'thank you'" - Nigel Harris, CEO Mater Foundation

Friday 3 July 2020

‘Philanthropy’ is an interesting word. It can be hard to pronounce and can be interpreted quite broadly.

I prefer to explain philanthropy as simply ‘love of people’ and ‘voluntary service and giving for the common good.’

As I reflect on my 25 years at Mater, immersed in philanthropy, these simple ideas of love, service and giving ring loudly.

Mater is fortunate to have such generous and enduring community support. While I haven’t met all our supporters personally, I have been lucky enough to get to know many of them over the years.

I have come to know many people cared for at Mater; from the tiniest of babies, to folk in the twilight of their lives. I have seen how compassionate care changes lives, particularly during some of our most vulnerable moments.

I have also come to know many clinicians, researchers, educators, and those who work in roles that support healthcare, and have come to understand just what makes your work special.

And I have seen how love, service and giving converge and connect those who give care, those whom we care for, and those who give in support of all that we do at Mater.

Philanthrophy, and its servant fundraising, are anchored in the traditions of the Sisters of Mercy. Giving is integral to the Mater story and is at the core of our connection with the community, guided by our work in healthcare.

As my chapter at Mater ends, I simply want to say 'thank you'.

Thank you to my colleagues present and past; to the people cared for by Mater who have shared their lives with us; and to all our wonderful, generous supporters of Mater.

Thank you for living the love, service and giving that is philanthropy.

Farewell,
Nigel
