In memory of Dr Gavan Carroll
Anaesthetist Dr Gavan Carroll had a connection to Mater that spanned the breadth of his long and distinguished medical career.

He first joined Mater as a Resident Medical Officer in 1953 and the following year he became an anaesthetics registrar.

Fellowship training would then take him to the UK for two years, but upon his return to Australia he quickly resumed work at Mater as a consultant anaesthetist.

This was at the same time that Dr Carroll was establishing his private practice with fellow anaesthetists Dr Hugh Connelly and Dr Sadie McLeod.

The trio broke new ground at the time by establishing their practice as an association made up of members and associates, rather than adopt the traditional ‘partners in practice’ model.

Their goal was to create a medical practice that embraced equity and sustainability, where all members had equal standing regardless of their seniority.

Within its first 10 years the practice, now known as Wickham Terrace Anaesthesia, had welcomed 11 anaesthetists as associates.

Dr Carroll remained a consultant at Mater until his retirement in 2002.

He was a natural leader and held a number of leadership appointments during his career, including a term as President of the Queensland Branch of the Australian Society of Anaesthetists.

At Mater he was President of the Mater Staff Association (1969-70) and a member of the Mater Public Hospitals Advisory Medical Board (1963-66).

Dr Carroll is remembered as a skilled doctor, giving teacher, sporting enthusiast and loving family man.

May his soul rest in eternal peace.
