Mater Health Director Anaesthesia announced

Tuesday 16 May 2017

Dr Ian Airey, MBBS, FANZCA, FAICD has recently been appointed to the position of Director Anaesthesia, Mater Health.

After graduating from The University of Queensland Medical School, Dr Airey began his residency at Princess Alexandra Hospital where he began training in anaesthesia. One year of his training was undertaken at Mater, and upon attaining his Fellowship, Dr Airey became a staff anaesthetist at Mater.

During this time he obtained a Queensland Health scholarship which allowed him to further his training in critical care medicine in the United Kingdom. He trained in the Renal and Coronary Care units at Hammersmith Hospital, London and in the Intensive Therapy Unit at Royal Victoria Infirmary at Newcastle-upon-Tyne. On returning to Brisbane, Dr Airey became the inaugural Director of Intensive Care at Mater Adult Hospital.

Dr Airey then entered private practice. He and his colleagues offered a specialist Intensive care service to the major private hospitals in Brisbane. For the first time private hospitals in Brisbane had around the clock support from intensive care specialists. This facilitated an expansion of the case mix private hospitals could offer including cardiac surgery, neurosurgery and complex general and orthopaedic surgery.

At the same time, Dr Airey developed a practice in anaesthesia, joining a practice which became known as Wickham Terrace Anaesthesia. For four years, Dr Airey was Chairman of that practice.

Dr Airey served for nine years on the UnitingCare Queensland Board. UnitingCare manages a number of community services for the Uniting Church, including UnitingCare Health which is responsible for four hospitals including The Wesley Hospital and St Andrew’s War Memorial Hospital. During this time he became a Fellow of the Australian Institute of Company Directors. On completing his term with UnitingCare, he was appointed to the Wesley Mission Queensland (WMQ) Board. He is currently Chairman of the WMQ Council.

As Director Anaesthesia, Dr Airey will be responsible for delivering a balance of strategic expertise and operational leadership within all Mater hospitals, and will lead the multi-disciplinary care of patients across both public and private services.
