I am delighted to start in my role as Acting CEO of the Mater Group, and honoured to have been given this responsibility by our Board of Directors.
I’d like to acknowledge the terrific work done by Dr Shane Kelly as Group CEO over the past three years. Shane has lead the organisation very well through huge changes, not least the formation of the Mater Group, restructure of Mater Health and the establishment of Mater Private Hospital Springfield. With Shane’s appointment to the role of Group CEO of St John of God Health Care, he has achieved the terrific combination of an important and prominent role in Catholic Healthcare in Australia, plus the opportunity to go “home” to Perth. I also thank Shane for a very comprehensive and sage handover over the past few weeks, and wish him and his family the very best for the future.
Supported by the Board and the Group Executive, the focus I plan to bring to the GCEO role and to the organisation has two components.
Firstly, I will promote and implement a strong emphasis on high quality performance, measured against international standards, across the group. We have a public and personal responsibility to ensure all patient care is of high standard and safe; that our education programs produce graduates in demand; that our research has broad clinical impact; and that our donors’ generosity is rewarded by efficient and purposeful use of funds. This approach will entail identification and continuation of things we do well and, in other areas, clear, rapid and sustainable improvement.
Secondly, I will emphasise and promote exemplary standards of behaviour across the Group. Behaviour will be fully in keeping with Mercy values, with all of us actively seeking to behave toward others as we expect them to behave toward us (obviously not a new concept!). Everyone has a responsibility to “call out” behaviour that does not meet these standards, and every manager, leader or colleague has a responsibility to ensure that their area is one where good behaviour is the norm, and suboptimal behaviour is managed appropriately, fairly and swiftly. In fulfilling these responsibilities, I offer you the full support of my office, including an open opportunity to discuss any behaviour issues with me.
The reasons for this approach are three-fold:-
We are immensely privileged to work (and, for 700 of us, volunteer) in an environment that is dedicated to improving the lives of others, and it’s important that we enjoy what we do!
