Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs)

Change in Mater Hospital Brisbane Specialist Clinic Referral Form - Referral to Head of Clinic

We have recently changed our referral forms for Mater Hospital Brisbane specialist clinics to better meet the needs of our referring GPs. In most cases, referrals will remain to the Head of Clinic only.

The following FAQs are in response to questions from our referring GPs about this change to Head of Clinic referrals.

Why has Mater changed the referral form?

We have changed our referral form in response to feedback from referring GPs that the previous requirement to select a specialist was confusing. GPs told us that their priority was to refer patients to the first available specialist; however they weren’t able to request this through the previous referral form. Now, referrals are directed to the Head of Clinic who can facilitate referral to the most suitable specialist for the patient, considering the patient’s needs and the workload of all specialists in the service.

How do I select a specialist now?

The new referral forms (online and paper) prompt referral to the Head of Specialty only. Please ensure that you select the Head of Specialty to facilitate a valid, named referral to these services.

I need to provide an updated referral to my patient’s specialist. How do I provide an updated referral to another specialist within the service?

Updated referrals can be directed to the Head of Clinic for the service, who will refer on to the most suitable specialist. Alternatively, you can manually enter the specialists name on the paper referral (tick updated referral and write the specialist name).

Who can I speak with if I have any questions?

For technical questions regarding online referrals please contact Lyam Jones (Team Leader Solution Support) or phone 07 3163 8123.

For referral enquiries, please contact [email protected]  or phone 07 3163 7552.
