G20 Leaders’ Summit and possible impact on Mater Health Services - South Brisbane

Monday 28 July 2014

The G20 Leaders’ Summit will be held at the Brisbane Convention and Exhibition Centre on 15 and 16 November 2014.

Mater will be operating as usual over the period of the G20 Leader’ Summit except for:

  • the cancellation of some outpatient clinics on the afternoon of Thursday 13 November
  • public holiday operations on Friday 14 November
  • usual weekend operations on 15 and 16 November

The G20 Summit will have a range of impacts on Mater Health Services, its staff and stakeholders. While these impacts are not expected to be extensive, it is likely that patients, specialists and any other visitors to the South Brisbane campus may experience traffic delays. Those visiting over this period will need to allow extra time for travelling to and from Mater.  It is anticipated that there will be alterations to public transport routes for the duration of the G20.

While not all the impacts are known at present, and may not be known for some time, we will provide regular updates to any possible service impacts via Mater Online as they are known.

The Queensland Police Service website for G20 is also a useful source of information and provides maps of the declared and restricted areas http://www.police.qld.gov.au/g20/.

At this stage Queensland Police Service has no plan or intention to lock down the city of Brisbane. G20 events will be as far as possible interwoven with business as usual, however some residents and businesses located near the restricted areas may expect some disruptions in the immediate lead-up to, and during the G20 events.

Mater is not currently in a restricted area but is situated in a declared area.  The declared area is a term that is used in the G20 (Safety and Security) Act 2013. Many streets within the Brisbane declared area will be required to be used as motorcade routes between meeting and accommodation venues.  While there will be no physical barriers around the declared area, people may notice an increased police presence.

Mater is working with Queensland Police Service and the emergency services to develop an appropriate plan for ‘normal operation of business’, where possible, during the G20 Leaders’ Summit.
