Colorectal Surgery - public patients

Purpose

This page contains information for general practitioners on how to refer patients aged 16 years and over to Colorectal Surgery at Mater Hospital Brisbane.

Scope of Service

Mater Hospital Brisbane's Colorectal Service has the primary goal of delivering holistic, patient centric care to patients throughout their entire journey of care. The Mater Colocrectal Service currently offers inpatient and outpatient services for:

  • Specialist outpatient appointments
  • Colonoscopy
  • Gastroscopy
  • Surgical theatre

Referral Criteria

Please include all of the minimum referral requirements and (where appropriate):

-  Include recent endoscopy of colonoscopy report

-  Imaging, includings films and reports, CT report, biopsy result and haemaglobin level

-  DRE/perianal findings

-  Family history of colorectal cancer

Referral Categorisation

Available appointments are provided to our patients based on clinical priority

This should be used as a general guideline only – categorisation will be based on the individual referral.

PRIORITY SEMI-URGENT ROUTINE

Colorectal neoplasm

  • Seen at colonoscopy
  • On imaging
  • Mass on DRE

Occult bleeding

  • Positive FOBT
  • Iron deficiency/anaemia aged 40 years and above
  • Anaemia with red flag symptoms

Painless PR bleeding

  • Aged 50 years and above
  • Aged less than 50 years with red flag symptoms

High risk groups

  • Raised CEA with personal history of colorectal cancer
  • FAP patient requiring surveillance scope
  • AIN in transplant/HIV patient

 

Painful anorectal conditions

  • Haemorrhiods
  • Anal fissures
  • Rectal prolapse

Inflammatory conditions

  • Recurrent perianal abscess/fistula
  • Recurrent pilonidal abscess
  • Diverticular abscess/fistula
  • Crohn's disease
  • Ulcerative colitis

Painless PR bleeding

  • Aged less than 50 years, no red flag symptoms and no rectal mass on DRE

Needing surveillance colonoscopy this year

  • Personal history of colorectal cancer/polyps
  • Lynch/polyposis syndromes

Stoma issues

  • e.g. hernia

Functional disorders

  • Faecal incontinence
  • Obstructed defaecation
  • Chronic diarrhoea
  • Chronic constipation

Miscellaneous anorectal conditions

  • Pruritis ani
  • Perianal tags
  • Perianal warts
  • Pilonidal sinus
  • coccygodynia

​Colorectal cancer screening

  • asymptomatic
Colorectal Red Flag Symptoms ► Include a change in bowel habit, weight loss, anorexia, abdominal pain, PR mucous, tenesmus, abdominal distension and nausea/vomiting.
For URGENT colorectal cases (for example obstructing colorectal neoplasm), please contact the Colorectal Surgical Registrar through Mater switchboard (telephone 07 3163 811) to facilitate an urgent clinical review.
Mater endeavours to see all priority patients within 30 days from GP referral Mater endeavours to see all semi urgent patients within 3 months from GP referral Mater endeavours to see all routine referrals within 12 months from GP referral
