Refugee Health Connect

Refugee Health Connect is a single point of contact for assistance and advice regarding access to the most appropriate primary health care service for all people from refugee background, including newly arrived Humanitarian entrants, asylum seekers and people with complex health needs.  RHC works closely with settlement support services, general practice and hospital-based support services to increase health access for refugees and assisting them to navigate the health system.

Refugee Health Connect is a partnership with the Mater Integrated Refugee Health Service (MIRHS) and Metro South Hospital and Health Service, Brisbane South Primary Health Network (PHN) and Brisbane North Primary Health Network to support general practice treating people from refugee backgrounds.

Practices are provided with:

  • Peer-to-peer education from PHN clinical leads – General Practitioners and practice nurses who have extensive experience in refugee health.
  • Cultural awareness training for all practice staff (General Practitioners, practice nurses, practice managers and reception staff)
  • Access to in-house practice support and guidance for practice managers and reception staff.
  • Strategies to become “refugee friendly” practices.

Anyone can contact RHC for assistance and advice.  Newly arrived Humanitarian entrants will be provided with an appointment for a health assessment at the most appropriate primary care service available.  For people from refugee background (in Australia more than 12 months) and asylum seekers they will be provided with advice and information about the most appropriate primary care service.

Any health professional who would like to learn more about refugee health can contact RHC to access support and advice.

RHC operates in Brisbane South and Brisbane North.  Anyone outside of this area will still be provided advice on other appropriate services but RHC will not be in a position to identify or work with general practices with an interest in refugee health outside of this area.
