Dr Stephen Fanning completed his Bachelor of Medicine and Bachelor of Surgery at the University of Queensland in 1980. He became a fellow of the Royal Australian College of Physicians and the Royal College of Pathologists of Australia in 1992.From 1991 to 1993 Dr Fanning undertook the Terry Fox Physician and Scientist Fellowship as awarded by the National Institute of Canada in Vancouver. During this time he also completed a Master of Science with the University of British Columbia.
After his return to Brisbane, Dr Fanning received a National Health and Medical Research Council (NHMRC) Post Graduate Fellowship at the Leukaemia Foundation of Queensland’s Research Laboratory. In the following years Dr Fanning worked as a visiting haematologist with Royal Brisbane and Women’s Hospital and Mater Hospital Brisbane. In 1997 Dr Fanning became the director of haematology and oncology for the Prince Charles Hospital in Brisbane.
In 1998 Dr Fanning commenced a position as director of Haematology and Oncology Clinics of Australia (HOCA, now Icon) and has continued with the group to the present day.
Dr Fanning has a special interest in the treatment of leukaemia, myelodysplasia, lymphoma and Hodgkin’s disease.
