Dr Kannan Kallapiran is a psychiatrist with more than 20 years’ experience.
With a keen interest in enhancing the mental health of mothers and infants, he has a certification in child and adolescent psychiatry and a special interest in the development of positive family wellbeing and resilient children.
Dr Kallapiran is a Consultant Psychiatrist at Mater’s integrated perinatal mental health centre, Catherine’s House for Mothers, Babies and Families and is the Medical Director at the Child and Youth Mental Health Service, Children’s Health Queensland HHS.
He also leads the Positive Childhood Experiences (PCE) research project at the University of Queensland, evaluating the impact of PCE on mental health outcomes.
Dr Kallapiran is a fellow of the Royal Australian and New Zealand College of Psychologists (RANZCP), Faculty of Child & Adolescent Psychiatrists, member of RANZCP Section of Perinatal and Infant Psychiatry, the Marcé Society, and the World Association for Infant Mental Health.
He provides holistic care for his clients, using a combination of medical and psychological therapies such as Cognitive Behavioural Therapy, Acceptance Commitment Therapy, Mentalization-based treatment and Mindfulness-Based Stress Reduction.
Dr Kallapiran works in a strength-based, recovery-oriented model with his clients, empowering them to live in alignment with their values.
He has worked in various public inpatient and outpatient-based services across New South Wales, Western Australia, and Queensland. He performs psychiatric assessments and interventions for children, adolescents, and their families with a range of mental health issues.
